Why is China not afraid of the US?

China’s confidence in its relationship with the United States stems from a combination of historical, economic, and geopolitical factors that have evolved over decades. One of the primary reasons is China's rise as a global power. Over the past few decades, China has transformed from a largely agrarian society into an economic powerhouse. Its rapid industrialization, massive infrastructure projects, and growing influence in global trade have positioned China as the second-largest economy in the world. This economic strength provides China with leverage in global affairs, including its relationship with the U.S. As a result, China sees itself as a peer to the U.S. rather than a subordinate, reducing any sense of fear.

Second, China’s military modernization has significantly bolstered its national confidence. Since the early 2000s, China has heavily invested in its military capabilities, including modernizing its navy, air force, and missile systems. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has become one of the most formidable forces in the world. Additionally, China has made advances in space technology, cyber warfare, and artificial intelligence, all of which enhance its strategic deterrence. This military strength makes China feel more secure in the face of potential U.S. pressure or conflict, knowing it has the capacity to defend its interests.

Third, China’s deep integration into global supply chains gives it additional confidence in its ability to withstand U.S. economic measures. The U.S. relies heavily on Chinese manufacturing for a wide range of goods, from electronics to pharmaceuticals. This interdependence means that any significant economic confrontation between the two powers could hurt both sides, giving China leverage. Beijing is well aware that while the U.S. has economic power, it cannot easily decouple from China without causing significant disruption to its own economy, reducing the effectiveness of any U.S. attempts to economically isolate China.

China also draws confidence from its role in global institutions and its relationships with other major powers. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has expanded its influence across Asia, Africa, and Europe, creating strategic partnerships and securing access to critical resources. Moreover, China’s position as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council allows it to influence key global decisions. By cultivating strong relationships with other nations, particularly Russia, and increasing its presence in international organizations, China has built a support network that balances against U.S. influence.

Finally, China’s political system contributes to its resilience in the face of external pressure. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) maintains a tight grip on power, with control over media, the military, and the economy. Unlike the U.S., where political changes can significantly shift foreign policy, China’s centralized, long-term approach allows it to implement strategic goals consistently. This political stability, combined with nationalistic pride in China’s resurgence on the world stage, gives the country a sense of confidence in its ability to handle external challenges, including its complex relationship with the United States.
